(COLDWATER) – A new phone scam is being reported in Branch County.
Sheriff Fred Blankenship says his office has received multiple reports from the public of a scam where an individual impersonates a Branch County Sheriff’s Deputy. The caller tells the intended victim that they have outstanding fines and must make an immediate payment to avoid arrest.
Blankenship says the Branch County Sheriff’s Office doe not initiate collections of fines by phone. Any caller demanding immediate payment or threatening arrest should be considered suspicious and potentially involved in fraudulent activity.
Blankenship is urging the public to exercise caution and to contact the Branch County Sheriff’s Office at 527-278-2325 to verify any communication that raises concern.
