On The Border: Help in crossing comes at a price
By: Tim Murray - Wednesday, October 16, 2019

LAGRANGE – For persons trying to cross the Mexico – US border illegally, help is found in the Mexican Cartel.

LaGrange County Sheriff Jeff Campos toured the border last month in Arizona.

He says crossing the border to a new life in America comes with a price tag.

"There are so many routes from the border. They only have to get 3 miles to reach the first highway. And the Cartel has people driving up and down the highway just picking people up and they're gone free. If you want to come across they'll help you, but it's going to cost you $6,000 if you are Mexican."

"There's 141 different countries that come across in that area. A week before we got there, there were people from India that the Border Patrol picked up. [The Cartel] charged them $2,200 per person."

"The Cartel gives you a kit. In that kit are camouflage clothes, and they'll give you food and water to get you three miles. They'll drop you off. Show you where to go."

In tomorrow’s segment, Campos talks about the knowledge he brought back from his trip to the border and how it applies in Lagrange County.
