(LEONIDAS TOWNSHIP) - The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office is following up on information received as part of an ongoing investigation.
Sheriff Chad Spence says the information may have a possible connection to the Brittany Shank missing person case.
Spence says as part of the follow up, his office is working alongside law enforcement partners to conduct an area search in Leonidas Township. The purpose of the search is to thoroughly investigate the information received and rule out any possibilities. Spence says the search is part of the investigative process and should not be interpreted as confirmation of any new findings in the case.
The FBI Detroit Field Office is assisting with the search.
Spence says this remains an active and ongoing investigation. The protect the integrity of the investigation, no additional details are being released at this time.
Brittany Shank was 23 years old when she disappeared on November 30, 2018. She had been at her grandmother's doing laundry. Shank and her boyfriend got into a car crash on Fawn River Road. She went to a nearby house where the couple called 911, but Shank ran away before authorities arrived.
Police say they haven't been able to find Shank's boyfriend either.
