(ANGOLA) - The Angola Police Department is warning residents about a new phone scam involving people impersonating APD officers -- and even their family members -- to steal credit card information. Scammers are reportedly calling residents and falsely claiming they're collecting money for the department's annual Cops 4 Kids event. Police say APD will never call asking for credit card numbers, payments, or donations. Legitimate fundraising for Cops 4 Kids only happens through the WLKI pie auction or in person at the Steuben County Community Foundation, and only by cash or check. If you get one of these calls, officers say hang up immediately and contact APD to verify. Anyone who already provided financial information should reach out to their bank or credit card company right away. The Angola Police Department is actively investigating and asks anyone with information -- or anyone who's been targeted -- to call their office.
