Cold Snap Drives Sharp Rise in NIPSCO Bills Across Michiana

(IN & MI) - Customers of NIPSCO across Michiana are reporting steep increases in their utility bills this winter, with some describing the higher charges as sudden and difficult to explain. The utility says the spike is largely the result of colder-than-normal temperatures combined with changes in natural gas market prices.

According to NIPSCO, customer bills are made up of two primary components: delivery charges, which cover the cost of transporting natural gas to homes and businesses, and the price of the natural gas itself. While NIPSCO sets delivery rates, the company says it does not control or mark up the market price of natural gas.

"Colder temperatures mean increased natural gas usage, which impacts the delivery portion of customers' bills," said Jessica Cantarelli, noting that higher consumption during extended cold spells can significantly affect monthly statements.

To help customers manage rising costs, NIPSCO is encouraging enrollment in assistance options such as its Budget Plan, which spreads energy costs more evenly throughout the year, along with other financial support programs. Additional information is available through the company's customer assistance resources online.
