Sturgis BOE Gets Update On EL Program

(STURGIS) – The Sturgis Schools Board of Education received an update on the District’s EL program during Monday’s regular meeting.
Student Services Coordinator and EL Director Amanda Herrera shared there are four teachers and 5 educational assists in the EL Program. The plan is to hire one more teacher.

To test out of WIDA, a student must have an overall score of 4.8.
Herrera says this year, there were 71 students that scored 4.8 or higher on the WIDA Test.
Herrera says the EL Program is not just for students who speak Spanish as a primary language. It covers many languages, such as German, Spanish, French and Hindi.
