(STURGIS) – The Sturgis Emergency Extreme Weather Center will be open Monday night.

Officials with the Center say with overnight temperatures forecasted to be at 11 degrees with wind chills below zero, they will be open from 6 PM Monday until 8 AM Tuesday. It is located at 307 West Chicago Road and is in the lower level of the building.

The EWC would be for overnight hours only and is open to assist people who have no place to go to get out of the below zero weather. There are places for people to relax, watch TV, play games, but not to sleep regularly.

After 8 AM Tuesday, individuals would have to leave to go to the warming centers around Sturgis.

Center officials say Tuesday night’s forecast is calling for a low of 13 and wind chills once again below zero. If they can get enough staff to man the Center, they will be open against Tuesday night. They will make an announcement on that sometime Tuesday.

The EWC is working with area churches and other organizations to have trained staff in the building if the EWC is activated. This is being done to make sure there is someone in the building in case there are needs.
