(BRANCH COUNTY) – A Branch County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured in a crash with a semi.

According to Michigan State Police, the incident happened at 3:22 PM Tuesday. Deputy Kevin Butters was driving west on U.S. 12 near Garfield Road when he turned to go east, in pursuit of a vehicle that had allegedly been involved in an incident of road rage. As Butters was starting to turn, his patrol vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a semi.

Butters was taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital where he was treated and released. Troopers say the seatbelt and airbags in the patrol car prevented Butters from being more seriously injured.

The driver of the semi was not injured and was also not given a citation.

Branch County Undersheriff Keith Eichler says that deputies along with the Coldwater Police Department found the vehicle with the suspects in the alleged road rage incident in the area of Pierson and Taylor Streets in Coldwater.

That matter is still under investigation.
