(COLDWATER) – A woman has been arrested and arraigned in connection with the overdose death of a Lakeland Correctional Facility inmate.

On October 29, 2023, Michigan State Police were called to the Lakeland Facility in Coldwater to investigate the unexpected death of 57 year old William Wilson. During their investigation, troopers and Michigan Department of Corrections officials retraced Wilson’s movements.

They discovered on October 27, Wilson had an in person visit from a 24 year old Detroit woman. While examining the security video footage of that visit it was discovered the woman had smuggled a small object into the prison inside her clothing and handed it to Wilson. He was seen swallowing the object.

An autopsy determined that Wilson had broken and unbroken balloons inside his body that contained methamphetamines. His death was ruled an overdose of meth while trying to regurgitate the balloons.

A joint investigation between the Michigan State Police and the MDOC resulted in an arrest warrant for 24 Dezaray Brown-Bobo. She was located by the MSP Second District Fugitive Team on March 4, and taken into custody.

Brown-Bobo was brought back to Branch County. District Court personnel say she was arraigned on charges of delivery of a controlled substance causing death, delivery or manufacturing meth and bringing contraband into a prison. Not guilty pleas were entered and bond was set at $50,000.

Brown-Bobo is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing on March 19 and a preliminary examination on March 26.

Wilson was serving a life prison sentence after being convicted in Saginaw County in 1998 on four charges including assault with intent to commit murder and armed robbery.
