(COLDWATER) – One of the suspects arrested for trying to smuggle contraband into a Southern Michigan prison has had their case bound over.
Branch County District Court personnel say 59 year old Edison Terry of Detroit waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday. He and 28 year old Adoreray Bruce, also of Detroit, are both charged with delivery of a controlled substance; possession of meth; conspiracy to commit delivery of a controlled substance; attempted bringing contraband into a prison and attempted bringing cellphones into a prison.
Terry is also charged with a fourth offense habitual offender sentencing enhancer. Court officials say he has previous convictions for breaking and entering; larceny, receiving and concealing stolen property and malicious destruction of property.
At 5 AM on August 12, a vehicle containing Terry and Bruce stopped on Marshall Road along the west side of the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater. Terry got out of the car and was apprehended by Michigan Department of Corrections officials. Bruce attempted to drive away, but was stopped and arrested by the Michigan State Police. The two agencies had been conducting an investigation into incidents involving drugs and cell phones being smuggled into the prison.
During a search of the vehicle, officers found approximately 96 grams of marijuana wax; 30 grams of methamphetamine; 10 grams of powder heroin and two cell phones.
Both plead not guilty during their arraignments in District Court.
Terry is scheduled to be arraigned in Circuit Court on September 11.
Bruce has been granted a new lawyer. She is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing on September 28 with her preliminary exam to be held October 4.
