(NEWBERG TOWNSHIP) – One person is dead and another is in critical condition following a one vehicle crash in Cass County.

Michigan State Police from the Niles Post were dispatched to a singe vehicle crash at 11:20 AM Tuesday on Corey Lake Road and County Line Road in Newberg Township. Troopers determined that a 26 year old Jones man was driving an SUV on Corey Lake Road when he lost control of the vehicle, went off the road and struck a tree.

Both the driver and his passenger, a 23 year old Elkhart woman, were ejected from the SUV, and transported to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo with life threatening injuries.

The women later died from her injuries. The driver is in critical condition.

Troopers say excessive speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Neither individual was wearing a seatbelt.

Assisting at the scene were the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Newberg Fire Rescue and Pride Care Ambulance. The crash is still under investigation.
