Sturgis HS AD gets award


EAST LANSING – Sturgis Athletic Director Mark Adams received a special award.

The Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association has selected Adams as the Regional 5 Athletic Director of the Year. He is one of only 14 athletic administrators statewide to be honored by the MIAAA.

Prior to returning to Sturgis where he graduated from high school, Adams had a successful twenty one year run as a collegiate basketball coach. Mark had stops at his alma mater of Hardin Simmons as an assistant Men’s coach for five years, and as the Head Women’s Coach for four years. After spending a year at Baylor as an assistant Women’s Coach, he moved on to UC Irvine as an assistant Women’s coach for three years, and finally spent the last eight years of his collegiate coaching career as the Head Women’s coach at UC Irvine.

Adams has served for the last ten years as the Athletic Director at Sturgis High School. During that time he oversaw Sturgis’s transition from the Big 16 Conference to the Wolverine Conference. Mark also oversaw the addition of Boys and Girls High School Bowling, Middle School Football, and Middle School Competitive Cheer. Mark has served on the MHSAA Officials Review Committee for Michigan’s Zone 1, and has also hosted numerous district and regional MHSAA competitions.

Adams is also involved locally with such events as the Sturgis Kiwanis and Sturgis Elks Boots & Shoes program and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Adams has been president of the Sturgis Kiwanis Club and also worked in the Kiwanis food booth at the St. Joseph County Grange Fair.

Mark will be presented this award in Traverse City on March 28tha at the MIAAA Annual Conference.
