Stabbing suspect enters no contest plea

COLDWATER – A plea agreement has been struck for a man accused of stabbing two men in May.

Branch County Circuit Court officials say 22 year old Javonta Lamont Tyson entered a plea of no contest on Monday to a felony count of assault with a weapon. By entering that plea, the court dropped charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

The incident happened May 16 on U.S. 12 and Sprague Street when the vehicle Tyson was in was too slow in pulling away from a green light and an automobile behind him honked. Tyson got out of the vehicle, went back to a pick up truck and stabbed the driver, a 39 year old man in the side.

The driver told police he followed the vehicle, driven by Tyson's girlfriend, to get the license plate number. The pursuit went to Hull Street and Michigan Avenue. Tyson again got out of the vehicle and stabbed a passenger in the pick up, a 47 year old man in the leg.

Tyson got back into the vehicle and it left the scene.

The Branch County Sheriff's Department stopped the vehicle on M-86 just east of Hodunk Road.

Tyson is scheduled to be sentenced on October 22.
