ELKHART – A crash involving two semis closed one westbound lane of the Indiana Toll Road in Elkhart County on Tuesday.

It happened around 6:45 a-m near the 87.5 milemarker near the Elkhart St.Joseph County line.

A semi tractor-trailer driven by 62-year-old Carlos Enrique Padron Ceballos of Fort Lauderdale, Florida was pulled onto the right shoulder of the road as he checked his tires.

Another westbound tractor-trailer driven by 54-year-old Robert Lewandowski of Chicopee, Massachussetts drifted to the right and hit the left rear trailer before entering the ditch on the north side of the highway.

The impact ripped most of the cab from Lewandowski’s truck but his seat belt kept him from being thrown from the exposed chasis.

Ceballos was thrown into the north ditch.

Both men were taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
