Commission studies Lakeview widening project

STURGIS – The City of Sturgis is looking at possibly widening a section of North Lakeview Street.

During a work session Wednesday evening, the City Commission heard a proposal to widen North Lakeview from U.S. 12 north to the railroad tracks. Todd Richter of Fleis & Vandenbrink Engineering says to keep the roadway designated as a major street, they would have to make it a little wider than normal standards.

Sturgis also received a Small Urban Grant of $375,000 to help fund this project, which is budgeted for the 2019 fiscal year.

Richter says if they do this project they would like to look at moving the water main, but there would be some restrictions.

The cost for the project would range between $1.27 and $1.4 million, depending on how wide the City wants to make that section of North Lakeview.

City Manager Mike Hughes suggested having the Commission to a site visit so they could see the current road and get an idea of how the expansion would look and what kind of impact it would have.
