Woman killed during U-S 12 garage sale

MILTON TOWNSHIP – A South Bend woman was struck and killed Friday in Cass County while heading to her car after attending Michigan's Longest Garage Sale.

Michigan State Police responded to U.S. 12 near Bell Road in Milton Township at 9:40 AM.

78 year old Carole Ann Martin had head, arm and internal injuries and was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where she later died.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Martin was shopping at a garage sale on the north side of U.S. 12 and was trying to cross the highway to get to her vehicle, when she was struck by a westbound motorist.

State Police urge all attendees of the Michigan's Longest Garage Sale to use extreme caution when traveling on U.S. 12 and to always make sure their vehicles are legally parked on the side of the road. They should also be aware of vehicular traffic when they cross the road.

Motorists are reminded to watch for cars pulling off of and onto the roadway from the garage sale, and to keep an eye out for pedestrians.
