Camp near Three Rivers cleared to open following illness

THREE RIVERS – A St. Joseph County camp re-opened Wednesday after a suspected norovirus closed it down.

Rebecca Burns, Health Officer for the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says the agency has authorized Camp Eberhart to re-open, after it closed on Monday and sent campers home. She says 46 campers as well as some staff members had symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.

While it's not uncommon for kids to get sick at camp, Burns says there were more than a “normal amount” of children showing signs of illness.

The CHA took stool samples at the camp to test of the suspected norovirus, but the analysis is not complete.

Norovirus is not an uncommon occurrence and often outbreaks are reported in schools, nursing homes and daycare centers.
