(UNDATED) – If you have received text messages about Toll Road Fees, you’re not alone.

According to authorities, this scam has become a nationwide phenomenon. Indiana State Police, who are investigating these incidents say they have also received the texts.

The text messages tell people they have unpaid Toll Road fees and need to pay immediately or face repercussions.

In a media release, the Indiana State Police says these types of scams, that use a sense of urgency to scare the intended victims, can be very effective. However, they remind citizens that if you don’t have a Toll Road account, and receive this text, it is a scam. If you do have a Toll Road account, it’s a good idea to check and make sure your account is okay.

There are some signs that a text is a scam. These “red flags” include: A sense of urgency; Unknown numbers in the text; A request for personal information or money; and A website listed within the text

If you receive a text like this, you should report it. Log into your Toll Road account to check it out. You can file a report about Indiana Toll Road through the Internet Crime Complaint Center. You can also contact your bank to report the incident or cancel your card.

Since this is a nationwide issue, sometimes those Toll Road notifications will even come from other states or areas. Make sure to look out for those tell-tale signs when it comes to any phishing scam.
