(UNDATED) – A child was rescued from a Branch County lake over the weekend.

In a media release the Branch County Sheriff’s Office says a call came in to Branch County Central Dispatch at 1:20 PM Saturday from the public beach at Messenger Lake reporting a drowning. The Coldwater Fire Department along with Life Care Ambulance arrived on scene with Sheriff’s Deputies arriving a few minutes later.

First responders were initially told that a ten year old Coldwater girl went missing in the lake, just offshore at Memorial Park. She was located by a witness, tangled in the weeds about 70 feet from the shore. The girl was pulled out of the weeds by the witness and brought to shore.

Sheriff’s Deputies performed CPR for several minutes. They were assisted by firefighters and Life Care personnel.

The girl was initially taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital and then transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

The girl’s name and condition have not been released.
