(UNDATED) – Michigan will have new U.S. Congressional, Michigan House and Michigan Senate Districts in 2022.

On Tuesday, the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission announced the new districts maps that the public will be voting in for the next ten years. The Commission, which was made up of 13 registered voters randomly picked through an application process, were given the task of redrawing Michigan's U.S. Congressional, State House and State Senate districts.

The Commission adopted the new maps for the districts after holding public meetings across the state and reviewing over 25,000 comments from citizens.

St. Joseph County will be in the newly created 5th U.S. District. That new District will also include Branch, Cass, Hillsdale, Lenawee, Monroe and Jackson Counties, along with the majority of Calhoun and Berrien Counties and the southern portion of Kalamazoo County.

With Branch County being a part of the new 5th Congressional District, current 7th District Congressman Tim Walberg would be the district’s Congressional Representative in Washington, D.C. if he should win re-election next November.

According to the Commission, there will be 13 districts compared to the 14 current districts. That reduction is due to the population change in Michigan based on the 2020 census.

While the Commission has adopted the new maps, they could face some legal challenges. If they do not, or if the challenges do not hold, the maps will take effect for the 2022 elections.
