(ANGOLA) – DNA was a key factor in the arrest of a man in the murder of a Lake James resident.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Department arrested 29 year old Matthew Hoover of Anderson, Indiana Wednesday afternoon in Anderson. He is a former neighbor of the victim, 82 year old Wilma Ball.

According to court documents, authorities say Hoover left behind two beer cans near Ball's body. Investigators sent them to the Indiana State Police lab for DNA analysis. Steuben County Sheriff Rodney Robinson says without the advanced technology, they are not sure a suspect would have been found as soon as they were.

Hoover is still being held without bond in the Steuben County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder. He is scheduled to have a hearing on September 27, with the trial expected to start November 29.

The matter is still under investigation.
