(COLDWATER) – A joint investigation is underway on a plot to smuggle drugs into the Lakeland Corrections Facility in Coldwater.

On September 19, the Department of Corrections uncovered a plan to smuggle drugs into the facility. They contacted the Michigan State Police Post in Marshall and requested assistance. An investigation was started and troopers were in the area actively looking for the suspects, assisted by MSP Canine officers and the State Police Drone.

Troopers took a 33 year old woman and a 20 year old man, both from Adrian, into custody, along with the woman's 15 year old daughter. The two adults are being held in the Branch County Jail on several felony charges. Troopers say the teen has been turned over to family members, and charges will be requested for her role in the matter through Family Court. Child Protective Services were contacted and made aware of the situation.

Michigan State Police say the investigation also revealed the involvement of several prisoners currently serving time at Lakeland Correctional. Charges are also being sought for these individuals.

The names of the individuals involved are being withheld until they are arraigned in Branch County District Court.

Also assisting with the investigation were the MSP Drug Enforcement Team, SWET, and the Branch County Sheriff's Department Canine Officers.
