(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis has placed Public Safety Director Geoffrey Smith on administrative leave following an accident.

In a media release, Sturgis City Manager Mike Hughes says that on August 15, Smith was involved in an automobile accident while he was off duty. Smith was taken to the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room with minor injuries.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department was called in to investigate the incident. Sheriff's Department officials confirm that Smith was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and then released. More information will be available at a later time.

Smith has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation of the incident.
