Southern Michigan Unemployment Up in January

(LANSING) - Unemployment went up around Southern Michigan from December to January.

According to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget, St. Joseph County had an increase in unemployment from 4.2% in December to 5.5% in January.

Branch County saw a jump from 4% to 4.8%. Cass County had an increase from 4.9% to 5.4%.

The largest increase in the area was Hillsdale County going from 4.9% to 5.9%.

Wayne Rourke, Labor Market Information Director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics, says regional labor markets exhibited seasonal unemployment rate increases from December to January. Additionally, regional payroll jobs decreased over the month.
