(CENTREVILLE) - Seasonal speed and weight restrictions will begin February 16 around St. Joseph County.

The St. Joseph County Road Commission says they are imposing the restrictions on all county roads under its jurisdiction starting at 6 AM on February 16. The exception will be "All Weather" routes.

Road Commission Managing Director Garrett Myland says the seasonal speed and weight restrictions reduce legal truckloads by 35% and speed to 35 MPH, depending on truck size and axle spacing. The 35 MPH speed restriction also applies to empty trucks if they weigh over 10,000 pounds.

Agricultural commodities and public utilities must adhere to the reduced speed, however no weight reduction is required. They must also get a seasonal permit.

Myland says county roads will be patrolled by certified weigh masters and those violating the restrictions will be subject to fines. Special permits for designated routes during frost laws will be required. Gravel roads are not subject to frost laws.

The seasonal speed and weight restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.
