(UNDATED) – Extra police patrols will be going on around Michigan until September that will be looking for drunk and impaired drivers.

The Michigan State Police and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning say the Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over Campaign is in effect until September 1. These patrols are in addition to regular police patrols at the local, county and state levels.

Officials say that over the Labor Day Holiday from 2019 to 2023, there were a total of 44 driver fatalities in traffic crashes around Michigan. In those crashes, 43.2% of the drivers killed were alcohol and/or drug impaired, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Throughout 2023, of the 1,021 fatal crashes in Michigan, 272 or 26.6% were alcohol involved and 230 or 22.5% were drug involved.

Law enforcement officials say if you plan on drinking or taking drugs, please make plans to get a safe ride home and not endanger others on Michigan roadways.
