(STURGIS) – The Citizens of Sturgis have said yes to allowing chickens in the City limits.
On Tuesday, voters approved an ordinance to allow chickens in the City with 1906 Yes votes to 1552 No votes (55.1% to 44.8%).
The ordinance will allow people to keep up to six female chickens in R-1, R-2, R-3 and R-4 single residential use zoning districts.
Roosters, crowing hens and guinea chickens would not be allowed under
the ordinance. All chickens would have to be kept in a coop in an enclosed backyard. The coops would also be located following property line setbacks and kept at a minimum distance from neighboring residences.
