(STURGIS) – A woman is in critical condition following a house fire.

Sturgis Director of Public Safety Ryan Banaszak says at 10:22 PM Tuesday, the department was dispatched to the 400 block of Center Avenue for a report of a structure fire, with a woman and a child trapped inside.

Police officers arrived at the scene and tried to enter the second story of the house, where the woman and child were thought to be, but they were turned back by heavy heat and smoke.

Firefighters arrived, and it was determined the child was able to get out of the house, but the woman was unaccounted for.

The firefighters entered the house from multiple locations and found the woman on the first floor. She was removed and found to be unresponsive. CPR was performed at the scene and the woman was taken to the Sturgis Hospital helipad, and was flown to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. During the flight, she regained consciousness, and is listed in critical condition.

Additional firefighters were called to the scene and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. The house sustained significant smoke and fire damage on both the first and second stories.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation by the Sturgis and Michigan State Police Fire Marshals.

Also assisting at the scene were the Michigan State Police, the Sturgis Electric Department, St. Joseph County Victim Services and Michigan Gas Utilities.
