(WHITE PIGEON TOWNSHIP) – A woman is doing well after having to be rescued from a St. Joseph County lake.
Michigan State Police were called around 9 AM Friday about a vehicle that crashed into lake on API Gravel Road and Bison Trail. Witnesses say the minivan was traveling at a high rate of speed as it went through the intersection and into the lake. They also said the driver appeared to be unresponsive.
Troopers arrived and found the vehicle partially submerged. They used a pontoon boat to get to the vehicle and communicated with the driver who was responsive but confused.
Troopers used a boat anchor to break out the side window and pull the driver from the vehicle and onto the boat.
The driver, a 37 year old Las Vegas woman, said she was heading to a family member’s residence in White Pigeon. After speaking to family members and with the evidence found at the scene, Troopers believe the woman may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash. She was taken to Elkhart General Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Joseph County Dive Team, White Pigeon Township Fire Department and Life Care Ambulance assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
