(STURGIS) – The Sturgis Department of Public Safety will be getting some new firearms.

During a recent meeting, the Sturgis City Commission approved a recommendation to purchase the firearms, following a presentation by Director of Public Safety Ryan Banaszak.

According to Banaszak, the replacement of firearms started for the Department 13 years ago. ...... {LISTEN}.

At that time, the Department transitioned to the Glock 40 caliber handguns. Then in 2018 they switched from 40 calibers to 9 mm, staying with the Glock model. As part of the replacement cycle, Banaszak says the department offered the purchase option and payroll deduction program of both duty and backup handguns along with patrol rifles to the officers.

After doing some research, Banaszak says the Department has chosen to go with the Sig Sauer M17 as their primary firearm, and the Sig P365 Macro as the backup firearm. By moving to this firearm brand, Banaszak says the City is ensured manufacturing of parts and equipment for their next full firearms cycle.

The City will purchase the firearms from Acme Outdoors with the amount not to exceed $57,683. That amount could be lower, based on the trade in value of the Department’s current weapons.
