(CALVIN TOWNSHIP) – A Northern Indiana man is dead following a two vehicle crash in Southern Michigan.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says deputies were called to the area of Cassopolis Road and Bullhand Street in Calvin Township just before 7 PM Thursday.

They determined that 20 year old Alyssa Handschu of Osceola, Indiana was traveling north on Cassopolis Road and struck a deer that was in the road. The deer flew through the air and hit a southbound vehicle, going through the windshield, and causing the second vehicle to crash.

The driver of the second automobile, 67 year old Daniel Haskett of Elkhart, was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation.

Assisting deputies at the scene were the Edwardsburg Police Department, the Michigan State Police, Porter Township Fire Department and the SEPSA Ambulance Company.
