(CENTREVILLE) – Enrollment is up for the winter semester at Glen Oaks Community College.

School officials say the winter semester enrollment is up 11% over the 2023 winter semester. In addition, the credit hours students enrolled in are up 14% from last year, which represents the largest enrollment in over a decade.

The data shows that dual enrollment for high school students accounts for 58% of the winter semester numbers, and overall dual enrollment is up 11%.

Dual enrollment has increased as more families see the value of their students receiving college credit while in high school to garner a jump on completing their certificates and degrees. In addition, 182 students enrolled in the Early Middle College program, where they complete an associate degree after their 13th year of education.

Adult enrollment represents 42% of the total number of enrolled students in the winter semester, and adult enrollment is up 9.6%. The adult increase is credited to the Michigan Reconnect (MIReconnect) program, which provides financial support to all Michigan residents over 21 to attend college.

Glen Oaks President Dr. David Devier says the school is seeing increased interest in attending college on the part of both high school and adult students as it becomes ever clearer that the path to higher wages and work satisfaction requires additional education beyond high school. This could mean a short-term technical certificate or a degree.
