(LAGRANGE COUNTY) – A Sturgis man was killed in a multiple vehicle incident on the Indiana Toll Road.

Indiana State Police say they were called to the median of the Toll Road near the 114 mile marker in LaGrange County at 9:40 AM Thursday. Crews were cleaning up a crash that had spilled diesel fuel.

Troopers say a pickup with an enclosed trailer was heading east and lost control, went through the median and sideswiped the tow truck which was parked on the inside shoulder of the westbound lanes.

The pickup then struck the tow truck driver and semi from the first crash.

The tow truck driver, 63 year old Martin Troyer of Sturgis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A worker with the remediation company cleaning the diesel spill also suffered non life-threatening injuries.

State Police say the roads were slick at the time of the crash due to the snow, but the 31 year old New York man operating the pickup was traveling too fast for the weather conditions.

The accident is still under investigation by the Indiana State Police, who will turn their findings over to the LaGrange County Prosecutor’s Office.
