(SHIPSHEWANA) – One man is dead following a house fire in Shipshewana.

LaGrange County Chief Deputy Sheriff Juan Arroyo says the Sheriff’s Office was contacted at 7 AM Monday about a structure fire at 7925 North 700 West.

Deputies along with several fire departments from the area arrived and started to battle the blaze. The residence was occupied by two men at the time of the fire.

Officers and First Responders assisted one man out from a second story window. The second man, identified as 54 year old Darin Smith, was not able to exit the residence. He was later pronounced dead by the LaGrange County Coroner.

Preliminary results of the autopsy concluded that Smith died from smoke inhalation caused by the fire.

An investigation revealed that the fire started on the lower level of the residence, towards the rear of the building. It appears the fire was accidental in origin, but it is still under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Shipshewana, Howe, LaGrange, Bristol and Middlebury Fire Departments, along with the White Pigeon and Tri-Township Fire Departments from Michigan. Additionally, the Shipshewana Police Department, the Indiana State Police and Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office and the Parkview Medics were also there.
