(FREMONT) – A rural Fremont man is behind bars following an incident Friday.

Steuben County 911 received a call at 4:30 Friday afternoon from a woman who said a man had been assaulted at her residence in the 200 block of South Pleasant Street at 10:30 that morning and she witnessed the attack.

Fremont Police responded and then called for assistance from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s detectives arrived and determined a 39 year old man was allegedly attacked inside the residence by the former boyfriend of the witness. The witness was also allegedly assaulted before the attacker fled the scene.

The male victim sustained multiple serious injuries to the face and was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital where he is in serious but stable condition. The woman was not injured.

Detectives identified the suspect as 33 year old Levi Lowell Pifer for rural Fremont. Their search led them to a house in the 6400 block of North County Road 300 West in Jamestown Township. Officers made contact with Pifer’s mother who provided a contact number for Pifer.

Detectives contacted Pifer who agreed to speak with them at the Sheriff’s Office. Following the interview, Pifer was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated battery and a misdemeanor count of domestic battery. He is being held without bond, and the investigation is continuing.
