(CENTREVILLE) – A Centreville man is behind bars after leading police on a chase.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says his deputies attempted to stop a vehicle Friday that left the scene of a property damage accident in Centreville. The suspect vehicle was heading east on M-86, and led deputies on a pursuit through Colon Township, causing more property damage and nearly striking other vehicles.

The suspect, a 38 year old Centreville man, lost control of his vehicle and crashed in the Village of Colon.

Deputies says the suspect got out of his vehicle and stripped off his clothes until he was nude. Officers were giving verbal commands to the man, who appeared to be compliant, he then struck a deputy in the face. The suspect was subdued and handcuffed after a brief struggle.

The suspect was taken to Sturgis Hospital where he was examined and cleared. He was then transported to the St. Joseph County Jail and lodged on charges of fleeing and eluding, assault on a peace officer, resisting and obstructing, indecent exposure and driving while license suspended.

Assisting deputies were the Colon Police and Fire Departments, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Life Care Ambulance.
