(STURGIS) – The renovation of a building in downtown Sturgis is getting some help from the City.

Wednesday night, the Sturgis City Commission was presented with an Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act Resolution. The OPRA Public Act provides for a tax incentive designed to assist in the redevelopment of older buildings in which a facility is contaminated, blighted or functionally obsolete. The goal is to rehabilitate older buildings into vibrant commercial and mixed use projects.

Sturgis Assistant City Manager Andrew Kuk reminded the Commission they recently approved an OPRA District for the building. LINKc.

Some of the additional improvements would be cleaning up the front facade, and a new roof and windows for the building. The anticipated investment for the project is $600,000.

While the Harrison’s could not officially comment on what was going in on the first floor, it’s been talked about that Mike’s Pizza and Subs would move in once the construction is finished.

The Commission unanimously approved the OPRA certificate for a 12 year period.
