(THREE RIVERS) – Authorities have found the body of a missing kayaker in the St. Joseph River.

Three Rivers Police Chief Scott Boling says his department was contacted at 5:46 AM Saturday about a kayaker who fell into the river in the area of River Drive and Wood Street near the dam. The caller said the subject had been bobbing in the water, then went under and never resurfaced.

Three Rivers Police along with the Three Rivers Fire Department and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department searched for the kayaker until the Sheriff’s Department Dive Team arrived. A fisherman told officers they went into the water to try and find the kayaker, but was not successful.

Due to the dynamics of the search, the Fabius-Park, White Pigeon and Liberty Township Fire Departments along with the Michigan State Police Marine Services Team also responded to aid in the search.

Boling says at approximately 7:14 PM Saturday, the missing kayaker was located and recovered by the MSP Marine Services Team. The victim has been identified, but their name has not been released until their family can be notified.
