(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis is hoping to renew a funding source that would allow them to continue doing some much needed road work.

The City is presenting a renewal request on Tuesday for the Sturgis Dedicated Street Millage. The City is asking to renew a 3 mill request for ten years.

Since the Dedicated Street Millage was approved in 2012, Sturgis City Manager Mike Hughes says the City has been able to tackle road projects that in the past had to be put off because of the lack of funding. In addition, Hugh says the City has also been able to get other work done as the streets have been repaired. ...... {LISTEN}.

Communities rate the condition of their streets on a scale of 1 (failed) to 10 (excellent). Since the passage of the Millage in 2012, Sturgis has seen
the average condition of streets in the City increase from 4 to 5.

Some of the road projects completed have been North Lakeview, West Congress, East Lafayette, Robin Hood Trail, Jerolene and Virginia Street. However, despite all of that work, approximately one-third of the streets in Sturgis are still rated as Failed, Poor or Very Poor.

Hughes says if the Millage is renewed, over its life, it will bring in $7.5 million. The State of Michigan will also give another $2 million towards street projects because of the millage.

Polls will be open Tuesday until 8 PM.
