(STURGIS) – Another step has been taken to build a roundabout near Sturgis Middle School.

Sturgis City Commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved a grant contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation for the completion of the roundabout. It will be constructed at the intersection of East Lafayette Street and North Franks Avenue this summer.

Sturgis City Engineer Barry Cox says the the agreement calls for the City to get Federal funds of 80 percent of the eligible project costs up to a maximum of just over $488,000.

Cox shares the estimated cost for this project. ...... {LISTEN}.

Cox says under the terms of the grant, the City is required to accept bids up to 10 percent over the estimated project cost. If the bids are greater than 10 percent over the estimate, the City can request a re-bid of the project.

Cox says if the bids are slightly over the 10 percent threshold, he would recommend going with that price, just to try to keep the project on pace for being done around the time the 2022-2023 school year would start.
