(CROOKED LAKE) – A motorcycle crash took the life of a Fremont man.

Indiana State Police say 28 year old Tyler Channing Szapkiw of Fremont was driving his 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the area of the 2200 block of West Orland Road near Crooked Lake around 9:30 PM Tuesday, at a high rate of speed. Troopers say Szapkiw failed to negotiate a curve in the road, went off the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Szapkiw was not wearing a helmet at the time the crash happened. Officers arrived and found him unconscious and suffering from a severe head injury. Steuben County Fire and EMS provided medical assistance. Szapkiw was flown from the scene to a Fort Wayne hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Also assisting at the scene were the Angola Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, the Steuben County Highway Department and Lutheran Air Care.

The investigation is continuing.
