(COLDWATER) – A new deputy recently joined the Branch County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff John Pollack swore in Nyx, a one and a half year old bloodhound as a deputy. In a media release Pollack says Nyx will help the department with search and rescue calls. She is a scent-specific trailing bloodhound, who will not only help the Sheriff's Department, and can be loaned out to other police departments as well.

Pollack says the Department is thrilled to have Nyx as part of the team, saying her skills will be a huge addition to their search and rescue efforts.

Nyx lives with her handler, Jackie Harris, who is a volunteer deputy. The two began training together when Nyx was eight weeks old.

Nyx received her certification at the Kentucky Scent Tracking Air Rescue Center. She went out at only ten months old to help with a search for a missing person. Nyx was able to get the right information and helped locate a missing woman.

Pollack says Nyx's older sister Xenia has been a deputy with the Branch County Sheriff's Department for over five years and has been involved in over 100 searches around the tri-state area.
