(MIDDLEBURY) – A three vehicle crash took the life of a Middlebury man.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office says 48 year old Richard Holden of Russellville, Arkansas was driving west on U.S. 20 heading towards County Road 43 at 2:40 PM Thursday. A second vehicle, driven by 47 year old Jason Kelly of Elkhart was stopped in the westbound lane of U.S. 20, waiting to turn south on County Road 43. A third vehicle was heading east on U.S. 20, and driven by Ivan Ciric of Parma, Ohio.

Deputies say Holden attempted to pass Kelly on the shoulder of the north side of the road, and rear ended Kelly's vehicle on the passenger side. Kelly's auto was then pushed into the eastbound lane of U.S. 20. Ciric hit the passenger side of Kelly's vehicle, causing heavy damage.

A passenger in the Kelly auto, 31 year old Oren Miller of Middlebury, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kelly was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital to be treated for non life threatening injuries, including a broken pelvis and a right fibula injury. Holden and Ciric were not injured. Holden was given a citation for improper passing.
