According to Michigan State Police investigators, 43 year old Christopher Van Doren of Sturgis was driving west on U.S. 12 near Carls Road on October 13, 2021 when an eastbound pick up, driven by Krontz, crossed the center line and struck Van Doren's Jeep head on.

Van Doren was pronounced dead at the scene.

Krontz was taken to Sturgis Hospital to be treated for his injuries, as was a 42 year old women who was a passenger in Van Doren's vehicle.
