(STEUBEN COUNTY) – An Angola man is facing charges after assaulting several police officers.

At 11:30 PM Saturday, Indiana State Trooper Ben Walker conducted a traffic stop on CR 275 North near County Road 85 West in Steuben County for a speeding violation. During the stop, Walker called for assistance from the Steuben County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit, after having reasonable suspicion there were narcotics in the vehicle.

Corporal Alex Harris and his dog arrived and started to search the vehicle. Officers asked the driver, 40 year old Aaron Sylvia of Angola, to exit the auto while they continued to search it. It's alleged that Sylvia resisted getting out of the vehicle and when he did, he became extremely combative, striking both Walker and Harris. Harris used his taser, but it was not effective.

Officers from other departments arrived and were finally able to restrain Sylvia. He was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation and clearance. He was then booked into the Steuben County Jail on felony charges of battery against a public safety official and battery against a public safety official engaged in official duty. He is also facing misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of paraphernalia.

Trooper Walker, another ISP trooper and Corporal Harris were all injured in the incident. They were medically evaluated and released without the need for further medical attention.

Also assisting at the scene were the Angola Police Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
