(FREMONT) – A person of interest is in custody in relation to the death of a Fremont man who was found in the garage of a home.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Department says the body of 36 year old Daniel Sheets of Fremont was found Wednesday in the garage of a home in the 57,000 block of North County Road 675 East in Fremont Township. Sheets was reported missing on July 23, after not being heard from and he was not answering his cell phone.

Sheets was reportedly seen at the home, which was the scene of a fire on July 24. When investigators went back to look over the property, they searched a garage, which was not affected by the fire, and found a body. An autopsy determined the body was Sheets.

Police say the fire did not contribute to Sheets' death, which is being ruled a homicide.

While searching the house and grounds, authorities found a man and two dogs inside a camper that was on the property. 30 year old Steven Restemayer of Coldwater, Michigan was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a charge of carrying a handgun without a license out of DeKalb County. He is being held in the Steuben County Jail.

The investigation is continuing.
