(COLON) – A day on the water turned tragic over the holiday weekend.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says the body of a young man was found Sunday after he drowned in Sturgeon Lake near Colon. On Saturday, a 911 call was received just before 5 PM, saying that 19 year old Nathaneil Hochstedler of LaGrange, had been tubing and fell off, and did not resurface.

The St. Joseph County Dive Rescue Team began search and rescue efforts but stopped around 10 PM due to darkness. They resumed their search at 9 AM Sunday, using sonar technology to help in the search.

Lillywhite says Hochstedler was found around 4:15 PM Sunday. The water he was in was approximately 10 feet deep, with 5 feet of that having silt and muck.

Assisting at the scene were the Colon Police and Fire Departments and St. Joseph County Victims Services.
