Shipshewana Man Injured In Plane Crash

(JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP) – A Shipshewana man was injured when his plane crashed in Southwest Michigan.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says his department was called to the 27,000 block of Indigan Lane in Jefferson Township just after 1:30 Sunday afternoon. Deputies determined that 68 year old Ralph Edward Lutes of Shipshewana was doing crop dusting on a field of potatoes when his plane crashed into a wooded area.

Lutes was taken to Elkhart General Hospital to be treated for his injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Assisting deputies at the scene were the Michigan State Police, the Edwardsburg Fire Department, the Edwardsburg Police Department and the SMCAS Ambulance.
