For the first time in 30 years participation in high school athletics is down. That’s according to a survey by National Federation of State High School Associations. The biggest contributors to the loss were football and basketball. Interest in boys and girls volleyball continues to increase.

MLB:
Cleveland 8, White Sox 6 – Yu Chang hits a two RBI single to put the Indians ahead of the White Sox 8-2. The Indians beat the White Sox 8-6.
Kansas City 5, Detroit 4 – Adalberto Mondesi hits a RBI single to give the Royals a 5-3 lead over the Tigers. The Royals beat the Tigers 5-4.

It was a Ruthian night for the Reds’ Michael Lorenzen, in the most literal sense. He became the first player to earn the pitching win, hit a home run and play in the field in the same game since Babe Ruth in 1921. He pitched the seventh and eighth. He hit a home run in the eighth. And he finished off the night in center field.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh speaking ahead of his team's matchup with Army. He says that both his quarterbacks did a good job in Week 1.

The NFL season begins tonight when the Chicago Bears host the Green Bay Packers. Kickoff at 8:20 p-m. NBC has the broadcast.
