HELMER – Police say the driver of a stolen vehicle fled after being involved in a crash that closed State Road 327 near Helmer for several hours yesterday.
The Dodge pickup was stolen from Auburn around 3 p-m and the crash happened 40 minutes later.
Indiana State Police Trooper James Bailey says the pickup was slowing at the intersection of County Road 500 South to make a left turn when it was struck by a Ford van attempting to pass it.
The van struck a NIPSCO pole causing wires to come down in the intersection while the pickup truck came to rest in a yard.
The person driving the stolen pickup ran to a nearby red passenger car east of the scene and fled.
36-year-old Justin Fike of Corunna was driving the van and refused treatment. Two of his four passengers were treated at Cameron Hospital. They're identified as 21-year-old Amanda Houck and 49-year-old Larry Miller – both of Orland.
Anyone with information about the driver who fled is asked to call the Indiana State Police at Fort Wayne.
